Woodpeckers’ Third Annual ‘Strike Out Suicide Night’ Set for September 5, 2023

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. — As the 2023 baseball season nears its climax, the Fayetteville Woodpeckers are gearing up for an impactful night. On Tuesday, Sept. 5, the team will host its third annual Strike Out Suicide Night, an event that seeks to shine a light on the importance of mental health awareness and provide fans with vital resources.

The gates to the stadium will swing open at 6:05 p.m., paving the way for a thrilling encounter between the Woodpeckers and the Charleston RiverDogs, set to commence at 7:05 p.m.

Adding to the significance of the e vening, the Woodpeckers will don specialty Military Appreciation jerseys. These unique jerseys will be auctioned during the game and will be available for online bidding from Sept. 5 through Sept. 13. The end of the 7th inning marks the closing time for in-game bidding.

The funds raised from this auction are earmarked for the “Hold Onto Hope” community connection event, a pivotal gathering focused on suicide prevention. This event, scheduled for Friday, Sept. 15, is being orchestrated in collaboration with several pivotal partners, including Veterans Bridge Home, the Department of Veterans Affairs, the Department of Defense, the Fayetteville Vet Center, and the Steven A. Cohen Military Family Clinic.

To further emphasize the weight of the cause, visitors on Sept. 5 will encounter 22 pairs of boots prominently displayed at the entrance. This symbolic gesture represents the heartbre aki ng number of veterans who, on average, take their own lives daily.

Fans attending the game will have access to a plethora of information, with various organizations setting up on the concourse to disseminate resources and details about mental health and associated services.

Mayor Mitch Colvin will grace the field to deliver a proclamation prior to the game and will also join three other pivotal partners of the evening to throw the ceremonial first pitches.

FAYETTEVILLE, NC – The much-awaited annual event, the 2023 Cumberland County Fair, is all set to welcome attendees from September 1-10 at the Crown Complex, located at 1960 Coliseum Dr.

For those who’ve been yearning for the sweet and savory aroma of funnel cakes, or if local agriculture piques your interest, the fair promises an array of attractions to delight visitors of all ages. And for the social media enthusiasts, it offers a plethora of vibrant backdrops for that perfect selfie!

The fair has always been a hub for creating unforgettable memories. Whether it’s a spin on the thrilling rides, enjoying local entertainment, or just immersing oneself in the cherished traditions, the Cumberland County Fair is a staple event that residents eagerly await each year.

Discount Days and Entry Schedule:

  • Friday, Sept. 1: Healthcare professionals enter for free. Entry is $5 for kids aged 3-12 and $10 for those 13 and older.
  • Saturday, Sept. 2: Both adults and kids over 3 years of age have a general admission fee of $10.
  • Sunday, Sept. 3: It’s Faith Day! Church bulletin holders get a $5 discount. Entry rates are $5 for kids 3-12 and $10 for 13+.
  • Monday, Sept. 4: From 12 pm to 3 pm, it’s Sensory Day, with a general admission of $10 for adults and kids above 3.
  • Tuesday, Sept. 5: Entry is just $2, though do note that wristbands for rides are an extra cost.
  • Wednesday, Sept. 6: A ‘Buy On e Get One’ offer is available, and seniors aged 65 and up enter for free.
  • Thursday, Sept. 7: Wit h a donation, attendees can get a discount on entry. 4-H & FFA members enter for free, students with ID can enter for $2, and all other attendees for $5.
  • Friday, Sept. 8: General admission is $10 for both adults and kids over 3.
  • Saturday, Sept. 9: The Youth Step Show is on, and for $15, you get entry to the show and the fair.
  • Sunday, Sept. 10: Entry is free for military personnel and first responders, $5 for kids between 3-12, and $10 for those 13 and up.

Tickets for entry/admission can be purchased from Ticketmaster, and while individual ride tickets are available individually or fairgoers can opt for an unlimited ride wristband for $30.

Rides at the fair will be provided by Big Rock Amusements, a trusted name owned by Matt & Kelly McDonagh. H av ing started in 2010, they have expanded from 10 to an impressive 30 rides. FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. — The “Empress of Soul”, Gladys Knight, will be lighting up the stage at the Crown Complex on November 10, 2023. As the curtain-raiser for Fayetteville’s 88th annual Community Concerts series, her performance is highly anticipated by fans and music enthusiasts alike.

Community Concerts, Fayetteville’s el dest arts organization since its establishment in 1935, is renowned for bringing top-tier entertainment to the local community. Beyond its concert series, this volunteer-led, nonprofit organization also manages the Fayetteville Performing Arts Hall of Fame, which was inaugurated in 2008. The Hall of Fame stands as a testament, celebrating local artists for their invaluable contributions to the arts scene. Day Resource Center to Combat Homelessness Opens in Fayetteville, NC

FAYETTEVILLE, NC – On Monday, Aug 21, 2023, a brand-new Day Resource Center opened at 128 S. King St. in downtown Fayetteville, marking a pivotal step in its ongoing effort to assist the homeless community.

This development is a key component of Fayetteville’s 10-year plan to tackle homelessness. Funding for the $6.99 million project comes from a mix of the Department of Housing and Urban Development’s Community Development Block Grant – Disaster Recovery, the North Carolina Office of Recovery and Resili ency, the American Rescue Plan Act, and State Capital Infrastructure Grants.

Visitors to the facility will find an large lobby area, seating for lunch is accommodates 193 individuals for meals prepared by Manna Church. The new center is designed to meet a multitude of needs. There are showers, each complete with a sink, toilet, and complimentary hygiene products. For those requiring laundry services, the center offers a dedicated laundry room, with the last load ending at 2:30 pm. Other amenities include a family room, a meditation space tailored to provide a peaceful retreat, and an outdoor bike rack. The center also features a phone charging station equipped with secure combination lock boxes for belongings.

Under the leadership of Dr. Leanne Scalli, employed by Cumberland HealthNET, the Day Resource Center has formed alliances with multiple community organizations. This collaboration brings together entities like CommuniCare, Cumberland Health Net, and the Marius Maximus Foundation under one roof, ensuring a more cohesive approach to service provision. Additional office spaces, conference rooms, and private offices are available for case workers from the Cumberland County Dept. of Social Services and other future partners.

As all these features are extremely beneficial, there are some expressions of concern. Many activists have criticized the city and county who both have issued anti-camping laws to deter sleeping openly on public property. The laws are allegedly to prevent safety or health issues, while activist and homeless residents expressed the laws seemingly want them to move out the sight of the general public. The concerns arise after homeless residents were moved from the downtown Fayetteville area while the local area does not have many accommodating shelters in place. A sleepout protest, preceding the facility’s opening, highlighting those broader challenges associated with homelessness in Fayetteville. Currently, facilities like the Salvation Army of the Sandhills offer only 54 beds, and the Manna Dream Center, with 20 beds, caters solely to men.

However, in further developments, a planned 150-bed transitional housing facility is planned a half-mile from this Day Resource Center. The former Knights Inn is aimed to become fully renovated with transitional housing and on-site services.

The Day Resource Center hopes to build a comprehensive support system from local organizations and agencies. Beyond those efforts, community involvement is essential. To make lasting change, local residents are encouraged to support non-profits, engage in outreach, volunteer their time, and donate resources, all pivotal actions in the mission to address homelessness and uplift those in need.

Starbucks and Bojangles Set to Replace Former Rite-Aid at Rowan and Ramsey Street in Fayetteville, NC

FAYETTEVILLE, NC – The once-prominent Rite-Aid building at the intersection of Rowan Street and Ramsey Street has begun its process of demolition this weekend, paving the way for new establishments. Confirmed plans indicate that the space will soon be home to both a Starbucks and a Bojangles.

Residents had speculated on the future of the old Rite-Aid site, situated at 108 Rowan Street, which has remained vacant since its closure in June of 2018. Built in 2004, the site’s inactivity has prompted interest and curiosity about potential developments.

Cumberland County Development Review site reveals that plans were official ly submitted on September 14, 2022, proposing both a Starbucks and Bojangles for that prime location. The move to revitalize this spot is in line with the recent expansion of Fayetteville’s food scene, evident from the recent inauguration of Biscuitville, which stands opposite Vickie’s Biscuits & Chicken, the previous Biscuit Kitchen.

The Starbucks’ design plans, submitted in late April 2023, illustrate a main entrance facing Ramsey Street and leveraging the already-existing parking lot access. Additionally, the drive-thru configuration echoes that of newer Starbucks facilities in Fayetteville. Notably, this new Starbucks is anticipated to operate as a drive-thru only location.

While the most recent documents for th e Bojangles structure are from the September 2022 submission, it’s evident that the chain is expanding its presence along Ramsey Street, from its location near the 295 loop junction to another near Country Club Dr, and now, an additional establishment closer to downtown Fayetteville NC.

An interesting facet to this development is the intersection’s popularity. According to 2021 redevelopment plans by the Providence Group, the crossroads of Rowan and Ramsey Streets sees an impressive traffic of approximately 28,000 vehicles daily. This heavy traffic flow underscores the strategic positioning of the forthcoming Starbucks and Bojangles, promising a thriving business potential for both.

Kion Smith: Lumberton Graduate, Fayetteville State Bronco, Now Joins the NFL’s Miami Dolphins for 2023-24

FAYETTEVILLE, NC – From the fields of Fayetteville State University to the big leagues of the NFL, Kion Smith’s football journ ey shows true dedication, hard work, and unstoppable spirit. Smith is now part of the Miami Dolphins, battling some time with practice squads, but now displaying an uplifting story for the city and its young athletes who may also be listed on betting sites like Tangansakti99.

Lumberton might be a county away, but it’s where Smith’s story started. The Lumberton High School graduate faced challenges early, missing his entire senior season due to an injury. But challenges can lead to great comebacks. Smith took hi s love for football to local HBCU, Fayetteville State University, and became a bright spot of talent on the Bronco squad. During his time at FSU, Smith played in 20 games, even though his senior season in college was cut short by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Even though he wasn’t picked in the 2021 draft, Smith kept pushing. The At lanta Falcons saw his potential and signed him to the practice squad, however he didn’t make their final roster. Next, the Miami Dolphins gave him a chance, and Smith spent two years improving his game on the practice squad. This hard work paid off on January 16, 2023, when he signed a two-year deal with the Dolphin, and making the 53-man roster this summer as offensive tackle.

Fayetteville seems to be a special place in Smith’s heart, displayed by his actions beyond the field. Showing that winning isn’t just about points and stats, he gave back to the place that shaped him. In June 2023, Smith held a summer football clinic for high school students at Faye tteville State, sharing his knowledge and life lessons with the next wave of players.

Now, as a new NFL season is about to start, everyone is rooting for Kion Smith. The excitement is clear, as Fayetteville can’t wait to see its FSU star can make an impact with the Miami Dolphins.
