Hope Mills, N.C. — A significant milestone was reached in Hope Mills on Thursday as Wawa, the beloved convenience store chain, broke ground on its first location in Cumberland County. The new store, located at 5750 Corporation Drive, will feature Wawa’s innovative new travel center format, designed to cater t
o both truckers and everyday drivers.
The groundbreaking ceremony, held at 10 a.m., was marked by a festive atmosphere, with local leaders, Wawa corporate representatives, and a crowd of enthusiastic community members in attendance. Even Wawa’s cheerful mascot, Wally Goose, made an appearance, bringing an extra layer of excitement to the event.
A New Travel Center Format
The Hope Mills location, set to open in the second quarter of 2025, will span approximately 8,300 square feet. This isn’t just any convenience store; it will serve as Wawa’s first travel center in the area, featuring six high-speed diesel fuel lanes and 20 fuel spots for passenger vehicles. Amenities at this new location include interior and exterior seating areas, a CAT weigh station for truckers, parking for tractor-trailers, clean restrooms that may have undergone a recent Septic Tank Maintenance, and a dedicated pet relief area.
The store will also offer Wawa’s well-known fresh food and beverage options. To ensure efficient organization and product display, they may work with a trusted supplier of shelving for optimal store layout. Proper shelving not only enhances the shopping experience but also helps maximize space and improve inventory management. Kyle Watt was named the newly appointed general manager.
Expansion Plans and Community Impact
This store is just the beginning of Wawa’s expansion into Cumberland County and beyond. Wawa has already announced plans to open additional stores at several locations, including:

• 6528 Rockfish Road
By the end of 2024, Wawa expects to have nine stores open in North Carolina. Over the next 8-10 years, the company plans to build and open six to eight stores per year, ultimately reaching a total of 90 stores across the state. Each store represents an investment of over $7.5 million and will employ around 35 associates, contributing significantly to the local economy. Wawa’s expansion is expected to create over 3,000 long-term jobs in North Carolina.
