South View Students Learn Big Lesson with DUNK Distracted Driving Program

HOPE MILLS, N.C. — South View High School students received an engaging and important lesson this week on the serious consequences of distracted driving as the nationally recognized DUNK! Distracted Driving program visited the campus.

Nearly 600 students filled the school gymnasium to take part in the high-energy assembly, which used basketball stunts, music, and interactive demonstrations to deliver a life-saving message. Professional halftime performers combined entertainment with education, helping teens understand how quickly a moment of inattention behind the wheel can lead to tragedy.

The program focused on real-world decision-making and personal responsibility. Students and teachers were invited onto the court to participate in challenges designed to reinforce the importance of staying focused while driving. Organizers said the goal was to connect with young drivers in a way that was fun, memorable, and meaningful.

The event was made possible through a partnership between the U.S. Army and Adrenaline Games Alliance (AGA Nation). Together, they brought a program to Cumberland County Schools that emphasized leadership skills, responsible choices, and practical driving safety habits. Speakers encouraged students to put phones away while driving, avoid risky behaviors, and recognize the importance of being alert and prepared on the road.

The DUNK program centers its message around a simple, easy-to-remember acronym that highlights four key principles of safe driving:

D – Don’t be a distracted driver
U – Undivided attention on the road
N – Never text, never drink and drive
K – Know your limits and driving ability

After the presentation, students had the opportunity to meet the performers, take photos, and receive autographs. One student also won a $100 gift card as part of a special AGA Nation giveaway.

School administrators and community leaders said programs like this play a vital role in helping young drivers develop safe habits before they become statistics on the road. With distracted driving remaining one of the leading causes of crashes nationwide, educators say early awareness and prevention efforts are more important than ever.

By combining entertainment with practical lessons, the DUNK assembly left South View students with a clear and lasting message: every decision made behind the wheel matters.
