3rd Annual “Remembering Vicks Drive In” Celebrates 50 Years of Hip Hop and Local Nostalgia
Fayetteville, NC — A beloved local landmark, Vicks Drive In, is set to be celebrated at the 3rd annual “Remembering Vicks Drive In” event. Taking place on July 23, 2023, from 5-8pm, at The Stadium Event Center, across from Segra Stadium downtown, the event promises to stir up fond memories while honoring the legacy of this cherished local spot.
The restaurant, which served soul food classics with a side of community spirit, was opened in February 1957 by Victor Parrous and George Skenteris. As Greek immigrants, the pair brought a unique flair to the local food scene, quickly finding favor among Fayetteville residents.
With no indoor seating, Vicks Drive In had a distinctive charm, featuring roller-skating carhops and a cherished old oak tree that became a convivial gathering spot, particularly for soldiers during the Vietnam War.
Perhaps one of the most memorable aspects of Vicks was its association with local deejay Bill Bowser. In the swinging 60s, Bowser would play soul and R&B tunes from a booth atop the restaurant. Enthusiasts would send their song requests up in a bucket, creating a vibrant atmosphere that drew crowds from all around.
Just a mile from Fayetteville State University, Vicks was a well-loved haunt among students and faculty alike. Homecoming weekends invariably saw a surge in business as alumni returned, eager to revisit their college favorite.
The “Remembering Vicks Drive In” event will not only commemorate the restaurant’s special place in Fayetteville’s history, but also celebrate the 50th anniversary of hip hop, adding a dynamic layer to the festivities.
Local residents and visitors alike are encouraged to join the event, reliving the rich history of Vicks Drive In while reveling in the cultural milestone that is 50 years of hip hop. There will be plenty of opportunities to share stories, enjoy music, and savor the memories of a bygone era that continues to shape Fayetteville’s community spirit.
