E.E. Smith High School Graduate J. Harrison Ghee Makes History at 2023 Tony Awards
Fayetteville, NC – J. Harrison Ghee, a talented actor and E.E. Smith High School graduate, achieved a remarkable feat on Sunday night at the 76th annual Tony Awards. Ghee was honored with the award for Best Performance by a Leading Actor in a Musical, becoming the first nonbinary performer to receive this prestigious accolade.
Ghee is currently captivating audiences in the hit musical “Some Like It Hot,” where they portray the character Jerry/Daphne. Their exceptional performance earned them the Tony award, triumphing over esteemed actors such as Josh Groban and Ben Platt.
During their acceptance speech, Ghee dedicated the award to all trans, nonbinary, and gender nonconforming individuals who have faced adversity and been told they couldn’t be themselves. They expressed gratitude to their incredible company for their unwavering support.
This monumental win coincided with another nonbinary milestone at the Tony Awards, as Alex Newell also claimed the award for Best Featured Actor in a Musical for their role in “Shucked.”
Ghee’s journey from Fayetteville to Broadway has been shaped by their passion for theater and the influence of their high school show. They honed their skills in show choir and summer camps at Cape Fear Regional Theatre, fueling their love for the stage.
Having studied at the American Musical and Dramatic Academy in New York, Ghee embarked on a successful career that included performances in notable productions such as “Kinky Boots” and “Mrs. Doubtfire.” They have also made appearances in television shows like HBO’s “High Maintenance” and Netflix’s “Raising Dion.”
Ghee’s portrayal of Jerry/Daphne in “Some Like It Hot” showcases their exceptional talent and authenticity. Collaborating with director Casey Nicholaw, Ghee was able to bring their unique perspective to the role, resonating with audiences and critics alike.
In addition to Ghee’s triumph, fellow Fayetteville native NaTasha Yvette Williams received a nomination for Best Performance by an Actress in a Featured Role in a Musical, adding to the local pride in this year’s Tony Awards.
