Celebrate the change of seasons with the Cape Fear Botanical Garden.  You can find gardening tips and a beautiful display of flowering on-site.  We have listed the upcoming events, now through Spring.

Celebration of Camellias on Sat., March 3, 21012

Pruning Primer with Roger Mercer

March 10, 2012; 2 p.m. – 4 p.m. or

March 13, 2012; 10 a.m. – 12 p.m.

Fayetteville Observer gardening columnist and CFBG founding member Roger Mercer will teach how and when to prune different types of plants. He will guide in hands-on experience as we prune garden plants. Receive a copy of Roger’s pruning handout, enjoy an after-pruning walk, and get a peek at some of his favorite early spring bloomers. Fee: $20 non-members; $15 members. Registration required by March 7 by calling (910) 486-0221 X 27.

Annual Orchid Growers’ Day

March 24, 2012; 9:30 a.m. – 3 p.m.

An event for everyone, beginner to experienced, interested in learning about growing and blooming orchids at home. Speakers will conduct workshops on the most common orchids available in local stores and garden centers. Presented at the Garden by The Sandhills Orchid Society in partnership with the Education Department of Cape Fear Botanical Garden. Fee: $25 includes seminar materials, a blooming-sized orchid plant to take home, and lunch (registration must be received by March 20, 2012 for lunch to be included).

Come and see our Camellia Garden! Guided tours and a “Build-A-Camellia” craft station for children will complement the free Camellia Show hosted by Fayetteville Camellia Club. The show continues on Sunday. Discounted Garden admission coupon with show.

Choose from a huge selection of plants from local nurseries, garden centers and societies. Join us for an adults and kids garden workshop, learn how to use the list of best electric pole saws for gardening. Visit the Orchid Show hosted by Sandhills Orchid Society.

Start spring weekends with a Friday concert from 6:30p.m. to 8:30p.m. We’ve lined up four of bands featuring a variety of music! Enjoy the ambience of an intimate outdoor natural setting as music fills the evening sky. Bring your blanket or lawn chairs. Food and beverage available for purchase from the Cafe Cart (outside food is not permitted in the Garden). Free admission for Garden members.

NATURE TALES

Our FREE popular preschool story and craft time, presented in partnership with Cumberland County Public Library, is held monthly on each first or third Saturday (except during events or CFBG holidays) and the first Tuesday of the month.  The schedule is subject to change. Each month we explore a different natural science theme appropriate for our Little Bloomers (ages two to six) but all ages are welcome! Registration is required for Nature Tales and the sessions fill up quickly.  Call the office (910) 486-0221 x 27 to reserve a spot for your child. Click here for a Nature Tales 2012 Schedule.

PROGRAMS

Docent Training

Wed., March 14, 2012; 9a.m. to 2p.m.

Share the fun of a pleasurable and educational experience at the Garden by becoming a docent. Each year, thousands of children from area schools come to the Garden to reinforce their natural science classroom lessons. Docents are also needed to help lead walking tours and hands-on lessons. Docents will learn essential information at this training. We invite you to experience the reward of volunteering while helping to further the Garden’s mission of conservation and education.  Call Jen Smith at 910-486-0221 x 27 to register.
