Joint Special Operations Command Credited for Death of Osama bin Laden
On May 1st, President Obama issued command to infiltrate a Pakistan compound containing the description of terrorist, Osama bin Laden. In a 40 minute firefight, Osama bin Laden was defeated after resisting his capture. It is reported that Osama bin Laden was shot atleast once in the head. His body was recovered, but ultimately dumped at sea. This is according to Muslim culture to bury the body within 24 hours. Upon news of Osama’s death by sources, President Obama was scheduled to address the nation, yet an hour await followed. The US address began at around 11:35pm Sunday night (view video below)
As news developed of Osama’s death, the Joint Special Operations Command (JSOC) was credited with the success of this operation. Reports state the U.S. JSOC Special Mission Unit (SMU) from the US Naval Special Warfare Development Group; DEVGRU — formerly known as Seal Team Six were responsible. Obama goes to Fort Campbell, KY to honor those involved with a scheduled “60 minutes” interview for Sunday May 8th.
JSOC, a USSOCOM sub-unified command, is located here at Fort Bragg and Pope Army Air Field. JSOC was under Obama’s command for a mission near Islamabad, Pakistan. It wasn’t until after 9/11 until the Pentagon gave JSOC control to handle the new goals of counter-terrorism. This special team is mostly assigned to identify, capture, or destroy terrorists across the world. JSOC usually works in close ties with the CIA’s Special Activities Division.
Today, President Obama will present Medals of Honor. Below is a video from NBC17 that has interviewed local soldiers on their reactions to Osama’s demise.
The day following Osama’s death, the world celebrates, most notably the United States. Victims of the 9/11 attacks have reported enthusiasm over the ended mission, citing closure and relief.
