New J. Cole Mural Unveiled Near Fayetteville State University
FAYETTEVILLE, NC — A striking new mural honoring Grammy Award–winning artist J. Cole now brightens the corner of Murchison Road and Matthews Street, directly across from Fayetteville State University. The artwork celebrates one of the city’s most influential hometown figures, whose music and message continue to inspire fans worldwide.

The mural, created by North Carolina artist Scott Nurkin, is part of the NC Musician Murals Trail — a statewide public art project that honors legendary musicians in the towns and cities where their stories began. Nurkin’s ongoing initiative spans multiple communities across North Carolina, connecting art, culture, and local history through vibrant street murals.
The location of the new piece holds special meaning for Fayetteville residents. The wall previously featured images of hip-hop icons Tupac Shakur and Nipsey Hussle. Now, it serves as a tribute to J. Cole — an artist who grew up in Fayetteville, graduated magna cum laude from St. John’s University, and went on to found Dreamville Records while continuing to uplift his hometown through philanthropy and music.
The mural’s unveiling has already drawn attention from locals, students, and visitors, many stopping to take photos and reflect on the artist’s journey from “The Ville” to the global stage. It stands not only as a work of art but also as a symbol of pride for the Fayetteville community.
With the addition of J. Cole’s portrait, the NC Musician Murals Trail expands its mission of preserving North Carolina’s musical legacy — one wall at a time.
