 Fayetteville NC Schools to Lose Sheriff’s Office SROs and Traffic Control Officers by July 1st

Fayetteville, NC — Starting July 1, 2024, there will no longer be School Resource Officers (SROs) or Traffic Control Officers from the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office at Fayetteville schools. This significant change means that the Fayetteville Police Department will assume responsibility for these roles within the city limits of Fayetteville.

In a letter addressed to Chief Kemberle Braden of the Fayetteville Police Department, Sheriff Ennis W. Wright detailed the transition plan. An informational and organizational meeting is scheduled for Thursday, June 6, 2024, at 2:30 p.m. at the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office to discuss the upcoming changes and ensure a smooth handover.

The Sheriff’s Office will continue to assign deputies to schools located within the unincorporated areas of Cumberland County. However, this change could also impact the towns of Spring Lake and Hope Mills, NC. The meeting on June 6 is intended to provide additional information about the new arrangement and ensure that all parties are prepared for the transition.
